Me : Hello ! For people who don't know you, could you just introduce yourself ? (line-up, music...)
Oniricide : Hello Matthias ! So we are Oniricide, a metal band from Torino (Italy) : Andrea (guitarist and composer), Daniele (drummer, keyboards player, composer and orchestrator), Luca (bassist and guitar technician) and Mara (singer and autor). Our music is a mix between differents styles of heavy metal, classical music and original soundtracks (from movies and video games). You can also hear some blues and funk influences on the bass and melodic rock influences on the guitar.
Me : Your band officially exists since 2011. This year, there were two brothers (in this case, Brothers Pellicioni) who wanted to found a band. Why ? Why do you create this band ?
Oniricide : In fact, the band is active since 2006, as a "cover band" (Metallica, Iron Maiden...), but we use 2011 such as we started to write our songs.
Me : The actual musical planet knows a huge increase of number of symphonic metal bands, due to Internet's expansion. There are a lot of bands who want to find inspiration by "great" metal bands (Nightwish, Epica, Within Temptation...) and then to copy them. But at the beginning, you wanted to propose something original, thanks to mixing of differents styles of music (symphonic metal, progressive metal, classical music...). Could we say that it's a good beginning ? Do you succeed to leave this standardization of music ?
Oniricide : We never had this problem, because we didn't start as a symphonic metal band. In fact, our songs were written without keyboards, nor orchestration and with a male voice. We think that "Revenge of Souls" is far from this standardization and also a good beginning : we are very satisfied.
Me : As all metal bands, you had difficulties to get a steady line-up, because of leaving of some members. The situation was improved thanks to Mara (vocals) and Luca (bass). How do you included them ? Do you organized auditions, tests...?
Oniricide : When we replaced our singer, we tried for a while to have two singers (man and woman), but after three weeks, we decided to keep Mara. Meanwhile, we did audience sessions for drums in order to let Daniele manage only keyboards, but it was not really successfull. Our original bassist was leaving the band, but we also found Luca very quickly. The situation is officially stable since January 2015. The inclusion of Mara and Luca was very simple, because we are one the same wavelength.
Me : Now, let's speak about "Revenge of Souls" which was just released few months ago. By my research, your project was complete very quickly, because you opened crowdfunding campaign which started 1st November 2015 and ended 7th February 2016. Are you surprised ? Why do you wanted to open this crowdfunding campaign ?
Oniricide : We are not surprised by this speed. We were ready in 2015, because we made shift between demos and public relations. Before crowdfunding campaign, we entered already at studio to record the album. We made this campaign, because we wanted to advertise our music and of course to have support by fans in order to know if anyone was interested by our project.
Me : Now, let's speak about it in more details. How is concretely happening the writing process ? Do each members write songs ? Which subjects inspire you ?
Oniricide : Usually, the songs of this album are composed by Daniele and Andrea. They are based on riffs and some ideas which come during rehearsals or just written on the score. The song will be complete with help of members and will be finally orchestrated by Daniele. Concerning lyrics, they are invented stories or inspired by great literature.
Me : When we are listening your album, meanwhile, we have the impression of listening classical music, because of strings, clarinet, etc. Basically, do you like classical music ? What are your favorite(s) composer(s) ?
Oniricide : Of course ! Yes, we like classical music and we are also united by this passion thanks to movies and videogames composers. Our favorites are Hans Zimmer, John Williams and Nobuo Uematsu.
Me : In the future, you would like to tour in Europe. Does it become a reality ? Are there any countries who want you ?
Oniricide : We hope it will become a reality. Actually, few countries asked us by Twitter to come to their place to play lives. (in Europe, but also in America) It's very difficult to do all the stuff ourself. That's why we need a Tour manager.
Me : Apparently, you planned to come in France. Are there any city which interest you ?
Oniricide : No, there are not any city who finds our interest, because all cities and all countries are attractive. We would like to visit all of them.
Me : In any case, it will be a pleasure to meet you here. After tour, is there any project ?
Oniricide : Yes, there are some ideas for projects, but that's a secret. Ah Ah Ah Ah !
Me : If anyone should ask you (and we hope so) to tour with a "great" metal band, which one would you choose ?
Oniricide : Oh there is a difference of opinion....It will be Dream Theater for Luca and Andrea, Nightwish for Daniele and Iron Maiden for Mara.
Me : To finish this interview with coolest things, I would ask this question, because I was surprised that you know our language. Do you like France ? What do you like particularly in France ?
Oniricide : We know this language, because Piedmontese and French are cousin. Our bassist come from Occitan Area and got a deep knowledge of this culture. We like France with lavenders fields, hospitality and your cakes that are very good ! (Yes, we are all greedy !)
Me : A last word to the fans before the end ?
Oniricide : We would like to thank all fans and supporters who helped us and we hope we will hear your voices to sing our songs ! A big thank you for sharing this adventure with us ! It's difficult to face the "giants" when you depend only on your strengths.
